Natural Sunscreen Agents: A Review
نویسندگان
چکیده
The exposure of skin to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation has a destructive effect on keratinocytes by causing DNA damage that can subsequently lead to malignant transformation. Cellular defense mechanisms against this injury begin with the immediate UVB-induced death of damaged cells. In less severely affected cells, cell-cycle progression can be blocked and DNA damage can be repaired through nucleotide excision repair (NER). If repair is successful and cells have not suffered irreversible damage, they will survive. In the absence of appropriate repair, keratinocytes undergo apoptosis, producing characteristic „sunburn cells‟. Sunscreen is defined as substance that protects the skin from excessive exposure to the ultraviolet radiation of the sun. Sunscreen use is often proposed for sun protection because of their ability to block UV-induced sunburns (the sun protection factor –SPF). It helps to prevent sunburn and reduce the harmful effects of the sun such as premature skin aging and skin cancer. They are routinely tested in humans and can be assigned a sun protection factor (SPF) which reflects their ability to prevent sunburn. Sunscreens are found in cream, lotion, gel, stick, spray, and lip balm type‟s forms. They are for external use only. An attempt has been made to review natural sunscreen agents.

Is There Truly No Benefit with Sunscreen Use and Basal Cell Carcinoma? A Critical Review of the Literature and the Application of New Sunscreen Labeling Rules to Real-World Sunscreen Practices
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common human malignancy. Both epidemiological and direct evidence have established ultraviolet (UV) exposure from the sun as the most important risk factor for BCC development. There has only been one randomized and controlled study to examine sunscreen's role in the prevention of BCC, and no significant protective benefit was found. This study did not add...

1 This educational resource summarises recent developments in sunscreen research, knowledge, and use. It starts with a review of the Nambour Skin Cancer Prevention Trial, which contributes to the evidence for a protective effect of sunscreen against melanoma. This is followed by consideration of UVA protection, correct application of sunscreen, skin type in sun protection, and compliance with s...

Today, the valuable metabolites of microalgae are widely used in the production of many cosmetic products, as the biomass of algae contains pigments, proteins, essential fatty acids, polysaccharides, vitamins and minerals, all of which are present in both natural foods and cosmetics are used. In fact, these secondary metabolites with anti-blemish and anti-microbial, anti-aging, sunscreen and sk...

A 39-year-old female presented with a 20-year history of a polymorphic, urticated and papular eruption occurring on sun-exposed sites but sparing the face and hands. She had been referred because, after many years of sunscreen use, she had begun to develop an exacerbation of her rash at sites of application of a new sunscreen, including, for the first time, the face. She described an urticated ...
متن کاملA review of sunscreen safety and efficacy.
The use of sunscreen products has been advocated by many health care practitioners as a means to reduce skin damage produced by ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from sunlight. There is a need to better understand the efficacy and safety of sunscreen products given this ongoing campaign encouraging their use. The approach used to establish sunscreen efficacy, sun protection factor (SPF), is a useful ...
